The Girona Flower Festival or Girona Temps de Flors is one of the most popular festivals in the city of Girona taking place once every year during the second week of May. This is the perfect time to bring out your camera and celebrate the spring.
What is the Girona Flower Festival?
The origin of the festival dates back to 1954 with a small event by young entrepreneurs who decided to organize the first edition of what they called the Provincial Flower Exhibition Competition (Concurso Exposición Provincial de Flores). The good response and interest of the people who visited that space in 1954 pushed them to carry out an event that has become the great international festival of Girona, an activity that attracts people from all over the world.
The festival used to be put together and run by volunteers but nowadays, things have changed and many parts of the festival are managed by professional stylists, designers, and florists. You are guaranteed to be amazed by the decorations and the overall prestige of the festival.
During the festival, you find the street walls, monuments, shops and gardens decorated with thousands of flowers, bouquets or other decorative ornaments. Other than being amazed by the amount of flowers and art going in this period, this is also a great chance to explore the city and discover its history.
There are 10 essential places that you are advised to visit and enjoy the city, its history and the flowers presented. These places are: Girona Cathedral, Sant Feliu, Sant Nicolau, Plaça dels Jurats, Sant Martí, Sant Lluc, Arab Baths of Girona, Sarraïnes, Torre Gironella / Jardins dels Alemanys and Casa Lleó Avinay.
